GILLESPIE — Shibui Studio Art Gallery, billed as Macoupin County’s first commercial art gallery, will open Monday at 119 S. Macoupin St., adjacent to the Illinois Coal Museum.

“I am excited to be part of the growing downtown community. It’s been a long-time dream to open a gallery that supports the work of other artists,” said owner Genece Hamby.

“Intuitively, I knew it was the right time and the right place,” she said. “I expect a lot of excitement in this area in the months and years to come.”

The gallery will have its grand opening reception from noon to 6 p.m. on October 1 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, food, and art exhibit. Its opening exhibition will highlight the works of Hamby, an award-winning artist known for expressing stillness, beauty and grace through digital paintings. It will also feature works by his sister, Trish Frederick, a self-taught acrylic artist with paintings inspired by her favorite natural sites found on travels across the United States.

The Shibui Studio Art Gallery plans to rotate exhibits frequently featuring local and regional artists within a 60-mile radius of Gillespie with no permanent collections.

The minimalist gallery will exhibit contemporary works on paper, paintings, fine art photography and a variety of other mediums. Its mission is to promote and exhibit the art produced by emerging and established artists in the region while engaging, enriching and inspiring the community to appreciate the importance of art.

Hours of operation will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays by appointment only; Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
