Rowland+Broughton recently completed the design and installation of an inviting new reception desk entitled “Beginning” for the Aspen Art Museum. Inspired by wood as a strong natural material with a strength of character and referring to the continuous renewal of the surrounding forest of the Roaring Fork Valley, the design reuses recycled fir, which has always been used for its strength and durability. availablity. The visually appealing exposed end grain shows off the tree’s growth rings.
Upon arriving at the reception, visitors are centered and invited to experience and engage with the Aspen Art Museum as a whole. The journey then continues to a higher level by climbing the grand staircase, or “moving glass” room. The fundamental wood “Beginning” reception desk is further represented and innovated in Shigeru Ban’s architectural woven wood facade, roof trusses and paper tube screen.
The reception set-up aligned with the December opening of the famous Andy Warhol: Lives exhibition, presented until March 27. Originally from the Tate Modern in London, the exhibition traveled to Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the Art Gallery of Toronto. The Aspen Art Museum’s presentation is structured to examine the artist’s life alongside his work.
About the project, R+B Principal Sarah Broughton, FAIA, NCIDQ, shares, “In the midst of change, wood is a foundational material that is grounded in place. Using recycled fir for the design of the new Aspen Museum of Art reception desk was a natural fit to deepen the connection to Shigeru Ban’s architectural details and the surrounding landscape, as the museum itself continues enhance Aspen’s reputation as a vital arts and culture destination. The installation’s coincidence with the opening of Warhol’s exceptional exhibition helped to elevate the overall experience for everyone involved.
