Saatchi’s original art collection funds new musical talent

Saatchi & Saatchi London continues its good work of nurturing new talent by hosting the New Creators’ Showcase: Music Edition at its The Pregnant Man pub in Chancery Lane, London, named after the famous advertisement.

The Showcase kicks off with singer and songwriter Ruti Olajugbagbe on October 5 with other emerging artists and music makers performing monthly for an audience of agents, brands, directors and curators.

Interestingly, the Showcase is funded by the sale of works from the agency’s art collection, stored or exhibited in Saatchi’s offices. The collection, of course, was started by Charles Saatchi who went on to revolutionize the British contemporary art market with his ferocious collection (he would visit an opening and buy the lot.) The Saatchi Gallery in London, founded by Charles in 1985 , remains a global force in the art to this day.

Yours truly once had to tend to his (very minor) injuries after walking into an office in Charlotte Street and ignoring the cries of “watch your head!” One of Charlie’s photos protruded about six inches from the wall, sitting dangerously close to the door. Another of the dangers in Saatchis back when there really was never a dull moment.
